Education, training  & experience

Professor Loïc Lang-Lazdunski graduated from Xavier Bichat Medical School, Paris in 1991 and trained in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery in Paris. He was awarded an MD in 1996 and a PhD in experimental surgery in 2000.

 

He worked as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School / Massachusetts General Hospital and was a visiting fellow at several prestigious cardiothoracic units including Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women Hospital, in Boston and Methodist Hospital-Baylor College of Medicine, Houston to get additional training in Thoracic Surgical Oncology.

 

He was appointed an Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Paris University in November 1998 and held a consultant position in a major university hospital in Paris until late 2002.

 

He was appointed a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2003, promoted to Reader in Thoracic Surgery in 2011. In 2012, he was promoted to Professor of Thoracic Surgery at King’s College London, with a personal Chair in Mesothelioma..

Research & Publications

Professor Lang-Lazdunski has a special interest in malignant pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer, thymic tumours and other thoracic malignancies. He led the program in malignant pleural mesothelioma at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, one of the busiest in Europe, following his appointment in London. He has helped set up or expand mesothelioma programs at several prestigious institutions in Europe and North-America.

He is involved in clinical and basic research in the field of malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. He has been an investigator or principal investigator in several important clinical trials in the field of mesothelioma, lung cancer, or thymic tumours.

He has contributed to many surgical textbooks and published more than 120 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and made numerous presentations at international scientific meetings. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was a member of the UK National Cancer Research Institute (2007-2014). He has trained more than 30 young cardiothoracic surgeons from all over the world.

International expert in the field of pleural mesothelioma

Professor Loïc Lang-Lazdunski is recognized internationally as an expert in the field of pleural mesothelioma. He has operated on more than 5000 patients with cardiothoracic problems in his career and treated more than 1000 patients with pleural mesothelioma.

He is a regular reviewer for the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery and served on several national and international scientific committees.

Professor Lang-Lazdunski is an active member of several learned societies including the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer and the International Mesothelioma Interest Group.

He has received multiple awards for his research in Cardiothoracic Surgery, including prizes from the French National Academy of Medicine and from the Royal Society of Medicine, London
